Juniors News ~ 16th September 2013

Season closes with our Open
The 2013 clubgolf season closed with the Dollar Open Flag event held on Monday 16th September. For those unfamiliar with the format of a flag event each child is given a flag with their name and category on it. They put the flag into the ground where their 45th shot lands. If they have already completed the 9 holes in less than 45 shots then the lowest score for the 9 holes will be the winner in that category.

A Stage 1 player’s 45th shot has a watery end.

There were 32 entries to the competition including a handicap category which is one of the best turnouts for the Clubgolf Forth Valley Flag Series in 2013. Anyone viewing the course from the 4th tee saw a remarkable sight as groups of 3 players and their accompanying marshall, plus supporting parents, occupied the Flag Mini Course stretching to the 5th hole plateau and back to the 6th and 7th holes. The thee open category results were:

    The Watson Cup
(Handicap - played over nine holes):
  • 1st Ben King - Muckhart
  • 2nd David McMartin - Falkirk
    Craig’s Trophy
(Stage 2 - played over nine Mini Course holes off the back tees):
  • 1st Ben McMillan - Dollar
  • 2nd Earnie Taylor – Muckhart
  • 3rd Stuart McMartin - Falkirk
    The Brian Devlin Cup
(Stage 1 - played over nine holes of the Mini Course off the forward tees):
  • 1st Luke Volland – Muckhart
  • 2nd Drew Milligan – Muckhart
  • 3rd Jay Taylor - Muckhart

Prizes included special Clubgolf medals.

The Mini (par 3) Course was magnificently prepared by lead greenkeeper Tony Leach. Course layout was established by Dr John Young who also acted as safety cover during the afternoon.

A Stage 1 beginner player takes on the formidable heights of the 7th green from a forward tee.

    The Williamson Trophy
(awarded to a Dollar beginner for the best score in the Stage 1 category):
  • 1st – Gregor Lumsden
  • 2nd – Jackson McKnight
  • 3rd – Cameron McMillan

“Can I take it home?”

Our thanks to the Club Captain Scott Maxwell for presenting prizes as well as certificates to the 21 Dollar junior members who attended.

(Huge thanks to the volunteer coaches and Dollar members who turned out to make the event possible: Barbara Malcolm (the Boss), Di and Moragh Dunning (keeping the pizzas coming and the bar open), Pauline (fixing the high technology scoreboard), Christine for keeping order at the 1st tee assembly point including safety at the inflatable practice net, Group Marshalls - Bill McFarlane, Linda Somerville, Alastair Simpson, Stuart Morrison, Carol and Douglas Caren, Brian Hutchinson, Martin Smith and Steven Hansen. Help from club members was augmented by Mandy Martin and Allan Martin from Clubgolf and by Clare Queen from Clacks Active Schools.)

Professional Helper Training takes off
During 2013 we have been helped by several young volunteers within the club: Ellis and Blythe Johnston, Robert Watson, Ian Leggat and Douglas from Tait McNabb. Following the Clackmannanshire Schools Flag Day in June, plans to expand this team beyond Dollar have yet to fully happen but seeds have been sown. On 9th September Allan Martin PGA Pro and Clubgolf Coach Developer held a workshop at Dollar. His programme involved observation of the coaching session for that afternoon and then analysis and reflection.

Allan points out where and what to observe.

Allan helps Ellis and Blythe identify the secrets of success.

Everyone is a winner when the after workshop pizzas appear.
(Thank you Moragh and Di).

Christine bows out
We are sorry to see a volunteer coach take retirement from Monday Clubgolf for Dollar. Christine immediately became one of the early team when Clubgolf was introduced to Dollar in 2010 and her long experience of junior golf has been key to the development our coaching methods. Much gratitude to Christine, we hope that she can now pay more proper attention to her allotment during Monday afternoons.

Dollar Clubgolfers visit the Johnnie Walker Championship
Dollar took up its allocated slot at the Clubgolf Activity stand on Sunday 25th August. The team happened to be there during the concluding round of one of the closest contest in the history of the championship with Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher performing a magnificent fight back from a disastrous 11th hole to earn a shared lead and a position in a thrilling three player play-off.
With many thanks to David Lumsden, Shaun Johnson Brand and Michael Donaldson for taking on the transport and visit supervision duties.

All set at the Clubgolf Activity Centre.

Ryder Cup Captain Autograph Update
Last year we managed to catch Colin Montgomerie (Ryder Cup Captain 2010) at the Johnnie Walker and obtain his autograph on a junior sweatshirt. This year David Lumsden tenaciously tracked down the European Captain for the 2014 contest, Paul McGinley, who duly signed his autograph, seen on the left of the image.

Thanks to the coaches
As the season ends thanks are extended to the patient coaches that have kept the 2013 programme underway since April: John Young, Christine Malcolm, Pauline Kirkwood, Bill MacFarlane, Ian Galloway and last, but certainly not least, Barbara Malcolm.

With the Junior Convenor they have delivered:
  • Twenty sessions to thirty-seven junior members
  • Taster event for the Dollar Brownies in June
  • Four sessions for the Srathdevon PS after-school golf club in May/June
  • Support for the Alloa Summer Camp in July
  • Three special summer holiday coaching sessions from PGA Pro Gregor Able
  • The Clubgolf special at Gleneagles (free practice, free round of the Academy course and free coaching from the Gleneagles Pro coaching team)
  • Assistance to parents who ran the trips to The Open Championship Muirfield in July and the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleaneagles in August.
  • Hosting of the first Clackmannanshire Primary School Golf Competition on Tuesday 4th June, an introductory competition for those pupils taking part in the 'Clubgolf' coaching programme which was supported by an EDF Burnfoot Hill Community Grant.

What Next?
All junior members can put all these coaching tips into action on the course until the next season. Look out for details of the 2014 programme during the year that the Ryder Cup comes to Gleneagles.

Juniors News ~ 8th August 2013

Gregor Abel leads the way
To help the top juniors gain their handicaps during this year Gregor Abel, visiting PGA Pro from Alloa GC, is delivering three master classes at Newfield before the school summer holidays finally end. The first session took place on Thursday 8th August and the low turnout proved a bonus for those who were there.

Gregor took the group through the basics and then added personal tips on keeping the ball long and straight. It worked!

He also insisted that golfers have to look good and demanded a perfect pose to finish; results above!

The next sessions are 2pm on Tue 13th August and 11am on Thursday 15th August. Meanwhile scores are beginning to accumulate with the handicap squad starting their Monday golf at 2pm. The full squad is Duncan and Angus Cooper, Ben McMillan, Ellis and Blythe Johnston, Heather Dillon, Ocanu Johnston Brand and Ross McKnight. Any other takers?

Dollar goes Open
Special cub reporter Gregor Lumsden has filed this copy:
On Sunday the 21st of July 2013, seven Junior Golfers from Dollar Golf Club were lucky enough to spend the day at Muirfield. Our first stop was a seat in the grandstand behind the 17th green, where we saw some of the early starters including a young amateur called Jimmy Mullen. We had to be very quiet when the Marshalls held up their “Quiet” paddles!
We then moved to the HSBC Golf Roots stand, where we played various golf games using plastic clubs and foam balls. Then we moved to the Practice Chipping Area where amazingly we saw Tiger Woods - most of his shots were going in the hole. All the other players were getting their balls close to the hole, but not in the hole like Tiger.

The Dollar group (minus Angus who could not find a T-shirt to fit him) before the Golf Foundation Swingzone experience.

We next got great seats in the front row of the grandstand behind the 9th green were we saw Paul Lawrie, Graeme McDowall , Darren Clarke (who birdied the hole), Charl Schwartzel and Todd Hamilton.
We then returned to the 6 hole putting challenge run by the Golf Foundation and ClubGolf. After we had finished the putting we were called back to the HSBC Golf Roots stand where we were joined by Scottish Rugby legend Gavin Hastings, who played lots more games with us, before doing photos and autographs on our programmes and T-Shirts.

Scottish sporting icon Gavin Hastings joins the party.

Then it was time to go home and we would all like to thank Junior Convener, Donald Malcolm, for arranging our tickets and car park passes. Next year the Open is at Royal Liverpool, and I am already looking forward to 2015 when The Open returns to the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Ocanu was there
On Wednesday 31st July Carly Booth and Helen Alfredsson hosted a masterclass for 20 ClubGolf girls and 20 SALJGA juniors at the St Andrews Links Golf Academy on the eve of the Ricoh Women's British Open in an effort to encourage more girls into golf. Our very own Ocanu was there!

The Gleneagles Experience
The annual visit to Gleneagles to enjoy free coaching by the academy professionals and some extra practice took place on Sunday 23rd June. This is one of the many ‘goodies’ available through clubgolf Scotland during the run-up to the Ryder Cup which of course takes place at Gleneagles in 2014.

Most of the the coaching squad (and families) helped out with the picking up of balls to fill the biggest bucket of balls in the whole world – some preferred to catch the camera!

With thanks to Kevin and Kirsten, the Gleneagles coaches.

Thank You
We thanked junior sports leaders Ian Leggat and Robert Watson for their help in delivering the first 10 sessions with a coveted DGC beanie presented by Rosie.

Everyone wants one

New Equipment Boost
A major benefit of the EDF Burnfoot Hill grant is the purchase of 10 new sets of equipment and new practice maps. The clubs and mats were first used during the Schools Flag Competition and are available for use by juniors outside Dollar on request.

The new 7 irons are given the full approval of Dollar clubgolfers.

Dollar hosts new Clackmannanshire Golf Competition
On Tuesday 4th June Dollar hosted a new event in partnership with Clubgolf and Clackmannanshire Active Schools. The press release from the Active Schools said:
“Dollar Golf Club kindly hosted the very first Clackmannanshire Primary School Golf Competition on Tuesday 4th June. This event is an introductory competition for those pupils taking part in the 'Clubgolf' coaching programme. 14 pupils, in groups of 3 had the chance to hit and putt their way round five specially designed holes on the course.
Everyone performed extremely well and had a great experience. Special mention must be made to Donald Malcolm, Dollar GC Junior Convener, for his organisation and set up of the course and to Scott Maxwell, Club Captain, who presented certificates to all participants and shields to the winning boy and girl - thanks must also go to Mandy Martin, Clubgolf Regional Manager, who also helped organise the event, Ben King and Ashley Robertson who are Sports Leaders from Alloa Academy and also Clackmannanshire Councils Active Schools Team in helping get pupils to the event and keep score as well. Well done to all those that helped and took part.”

Have Tag will Travel
The sixth session of the first coaching block was spent at Newfield sharpening up the full swings (thank you Robert and Bill) and checking out course etiquette knowledge with Christine and Donald. Meanwhile the beginner group was showing off their course architect skills as well as some great shots with Barbara, Pauline, Caroline and Douglas.
The Hon Secretary has kindly agreed to distribute bag tags to those who are expected to be golfing without supervision this summer and Junior Captain Ellis Johnston duly presented the tags. The beginner group were also presented with the Dollar GC starter bag.

Return to Roots
As explained in the history section of the website ‘Oldest of the Clackmannanshire clubs, Dollar was founded by a group of local men in 1890, when they opened up a nine-hole course at Market Park. With the annual subscription for its nineteen members set at seven shillings and sixpence (37½p) it was on fairly flat low-lying ground which is in marked contrast to its present layout on the slopes of the Ochils’. Today Market Park is also known as Newfield and we go there, courtesy of Dollar Academy, to use the ideal ‘flat low-lying ground’ for shot practice.
On Monday with the course flooded out and stormy weather promising heavy showers, 30 clubgolfers plus coaches and helpers descended on Newfield to hit a bunch of balls. Well, promises from above were kept, it blew and it rained but Dollar Juniors made light of the weather as shown below:

‘Wha’s like us?'

‘Some quality swings in the making'

Welcome back Stuart
We were delighted to have Stuart Fair, Dylan's Dad, back with us helping the beginners group.

Strathdevon After-School Sports Clubs
John Young took over running the Strathdevon after school golf club on 9th May. Next session is Thursday 16th May.

Welcome to Caroline
We are delighted to welcome Caroline to our coaching sessions as a helper to Dr John Young who is the beginners expert.

Many thanks to junior captain Ellis and her sister Blyth, Ian and Douglas from Tait McNabb and Dollar’s up and coming star, Robert Watson, who plays with a handicap of 2 for joining this scheme.

Congratulations to the new Junior Captain
Ellis Johnston was confirmed as Junior Captain during the Junior Committee meeting held in February. We hope that Ellis enjoys her year as captain.

Force 10 start to the 2013 Season
Clubgolf coaching for the 2013 season started on Monday 22 April with a record attendance of 36 including 15 newcomers. Along with coaches and helpers the clubgolfers battled against gale force winds but nothing seemed to shake the resolve of the Dollar juniors to have a good time.
Next coaching session is Monday 29 April on the course for all. What will the weather have in store this time?

Well done!
Congratulations to Ocanu and Grace successfully who completed a 12 week block of County Coaching at Forthview Golf Academy, Airth, arranged by Stirling & Clackmannanshire Ladies Golf Association (Junior Girls Section) which started during a wet and cold Wednesday night in January and concluded in late March. Stewart Craig, Head Professional, was very pleased with the girls’ progress and it shows!
