Club Championships ~ 2010

From the Qualifying rounds for the Club Championships over the weekend of 12th/13th June it was the "top seeds" - defending Champion Darren Hulston and up and coming youngster Gary Chalmers (left) - who emerged from the match-play rounds during the following week to contest the 36 holes final on Sunday 20th June. The spell of hot, dry weather with a brisk wind made for some fiery conditions - a running ball and hard, fast greens. Darren had played well within himself to ease through the match-play rounds but Gary had had a close call in his semi-final to 10 handicapper Douglas Caren who took him to the final green. Both were impressive off the tee and both adapted well to the conditions and with the match all square after the first 18 both were under par. In what was one of the closest matches for some years Gary went one up in the second 18 when Darren failed to get up the hill at the notorius 2nd hole. However, Darren squared the match again at the 9th with a superb chip to 12 inches and with a birdie took the lead at the 12th. Gary squared the match again at the 13th when Darren, in pole position with a terrific drive missed the green with his second shot and could only manage a bogey to Gary's solid par when his chip ran to the back of the green. Gary then went ahead following a 20ft putt for a birdie at the fifteenth and finally secured the Championship when he almost drove the green at the 18th leaving Darren with no choice but to concede when his drive disappeared into deep bracken to the right of the green. Both players are to be congratulated on providing a memorable match with some fine golf which kept the gallery captivated throughout.

The Division 2 Championship saw the final between Davie Cowie (top right) and Donald Malcolm. Both played some steady golf and, playing well below their respective handicaps, were all square after the first eighteen. However, it was the in-form Davie, the current Dollar Seniors Open Champion, who kept his game together during the latter stages and with a fine birdie at the 16th took the Second Division Championship by four holes up with two to play.

DOLLAR AMATEUR OPEN
Saturday 14th August 2010

Sponsored by David Tait Construction of Dollar the 14th August saw a large entry for the Dollar Amateur Open with players competing in both Division 1 (handicaps of 14 and below) and Division 2 (handicaps 15-28). The weather was near perfect, dry and warm with no wind. With the course in excellent condition and the greens fully recovered from the late start this year the golf was of a high standard across the board. Winner on the day was Alva member and the Wee County's rising star 15 years old Lawrence Allan (pictured left) whose four under par 65 secured the trophy by two shots. In Division 2 the winner of the Osbourne Elliot Cup was Tommy Burt (Dollar) with a gross 82 and the J M Ritchie Trophy went to Craig Inglis (Dollar), playing off 24 with a nett 60.

Steve Hansen of David Tait Construction, Dollar, presents the Harry Whyte Trophy to Lawrence Allan Snr on behalf of his son, Lawrence, winner of the 2010 Dollar Open seen here together with other prize-winners.

THE "LET'S PARTY" MIXED OPEN
SUNDAY 2nd MAY 2010

Although smaller than in previous years there was a strong field for the "Let's Party" Foursomes Mixed Open played on Sunday 2nd May. The weather held and the course was in good condition although still recovering from the prolonged winter conditions. It was a close contest throughout with some good golf on display and only two shots separating the first six places but it was the steady round and local knowledge of Dollar members Gordon Fenwick and Maria Symington (left) playing off a handicap of 14.5 who emerged the winners to take home the prestigious 'Brown Rosebowl' with a nett 67.5. Scratch winners with a 75 were the family pairing of Bobby Watson and daughter Eilidh.

If you missed these chances then have a look at the video from the link below - you could be knocking a few shots off your next round!

SPONSORS DAY ~ 12 AUGUST 2010

With the weather favourable and the course in good condition there was some keen competition for the Sponsors Day prizes on Thursday 12th August 2010. With the best three cards to count from four players it was the team of David Tait Construction of West Burnside, Dollar, which prevailed. Their team of low handicap players included the overall winner, Lawrence Allan of Alva Golf Club, whose 4 under par with an eagle 2 on the par four 15th netted 41 Stableford points, team-mate Michael Robertson took the prizes for 'nearest the pin' on three separate holes and with Paul Davidson and Alan Watson providing able support their total of 110 Stableford points was one better than that of Lowcostspares - runners-up for the second year in succession - with Craiglieth third with 103 points.
