ONE-TO-ONE AT THE 19TH
Scott Maxwell and I were chatting quietly at the side of the 14th green as we waited for the group in front to tee off. Where do your family live I asked. Down in Surrey and Sussex and in fact I motored down to see them a week or so ago, he said. I let Scott take his drive at the 15th and said “that’s a long drive”. Thanks he replied but I didn’t have the heart to tell him I meant the drive to the South of England and not his tee shot! Anyway he readily agreed to help me out with One-to-One and as he is a sponsor and was Club Captain in 1985 I was sure I had made a good choice. We continued our post mortem of our game, as you do, over a pint of Guinness in Brewlands House. 'If these walls could talk' was one of Scott’s comments and he told me some golfing anecdotes of days gone by when Brewlands was the social place to be in Dollar.
How long have you been associated with the Club and what’s your handicap?
I’ve been a member since 1976 and my handicap is 20 at the moment and falling! I just don’t play enough, although I started playing when I was a school boy in Troon.
Describe your business?
Let’s Party has been on the go for 6 years now and previously we ran “M & M” from the same premises at 75 Port Street, Stirling. We can provide almost anything for parties, stag and hen nights and fun events and Hallowe’en is definitely our busiest time of the year.
(In reply to my question Scott confirmed that he can get a dozen policemen’s helmets and handcuffs if I give him due notice - so watch out for a special Social event later in the year! Scott said that they also sell a large range of napkins and serviettes and the like - although they don’t hire out any items due to hygiene requirements)
Are you a shirt in or a shirt out man?
I have to say I’m a shirt in type of guy, definitely. It’s a generational thing.
Describe yourself in 5 words or so.
Quiet, shy even, helpful and I do try to be organised.
What is your favourite hole at Dollar and why?
Well all of them have had their moments over the years with some of them worse than others but just now I would say the 18th as it means I’ve got another round out of the way and can look forward to my next golfing challenge.
Tell a true golfing story about yourself.
It was on a Club trip to Spain and we were playing a course with a lot of water features. We had gotten into the habit of shouting “Quack, quack” when one of the lads had the misfortune of hitting a ball into a lake. (Strange how men never seem to grow up!). There was water on the left so I aimed out to the right at one particular hole but unfortunately I sliced the ball and it disappeared into the gardens of some villas at the side of the fairway. I could not understand why the group in front shouted “Quack, quack” so I asked them when we caught up with them at a later hole. It’s because your ball ended up in a swimming pool I was told!
What car do you drive?
I drive a Vauxhall Astra Turbo but can more often than not be seen around Dollar in Let’s Party’s white van.
Do you have any hobbies outside golf?
Unfortunately with the shop being open 6 days a week spare time is at a premium but I am keen on photography, I have a Nikkon D400 SLR and intend getting more into it later.
Name 3 people you’d like to join you in a 4 ball and why.
Tiger Woods, to see him close up in action, Lee Travino as I once stood near him at an Open and he was great with the crowd and a bit of a character. And Sir Sean Connery as he is a good Scottish golfer and must have some terrific stories to tell.
What is your favourite club, how long have you had it and what did you pay for it?
That’s easy. It’s my new Taylor made Burner 10º driver that I bought for £150 a short while ago from Brucefield. My previous driver was made illegal and it’s probably the best thing that’s happened to my golf.
What is your favourite gadget?
Again that’s easy. It’s my i-touch which is basically an MP3 player. I’m going to down load my favourite book “The Moon’s a Balloon” by David Niven on to it and catch up with the great story teller again when we’re on holiday in Spain.
